Rewkowski, Phipps to Join Georgetown Staff

Cornell associate head coach Matt Rewkowski has accepted an offer to join the Georgetown men's coaching staff, a Cornell spokesman confirmed to Lacrosse Magazine, and Maryland volunteer assistant Brian Phipps also is expected to join the Hoyas, under recently named head coach Kevin Warne, according to Christian Swezey of The Washington Post.

Rewkowski would serve as offensive coordinator on the Hilltop, while Phipps primarily would work with goalies, Swezey reported Tuesday evening. Official announcements are expected soon, though a Georgetown spokesman could not confirm or deny the report early Wednesday afternoon.

Rewkowski, 29, is a well-respected offensive mind who many considered a rising head-coaching candidate this offseason. Rewkoski restructured the Big Red's offense last year after Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Player of the Year Rob Pannell suffered a foot injury. The unit averaged 12.0 goals per game, ninth nationally, without Pannell, as Rewkowski tutored Ivy League Rookie of the Year Matt Donovan. Before Cornell, he spent four years at Hofstra and one at Denver. A two-time All-American, Rewkowski started his collegiate career at Duke before transferring to Johns Hopkins, where he won a national title as a senior in 2005. In 2011, Georgetown averaged 9.54 goals per game, which ranked 33rd natonally.

Phipps, 24, spent the majority of four seasons as the Terrapins' starting goalie from 2007-10, then joined Maryland's staff shortly after graduating. He served as director of lacrosse operations before being named volunteer assistant coach, which allowed him to work closely with honorable mention All-American Niko Amato. Phipps could help incoming freshman Alex Joyce, a top-ranked goalie recruit, emerge for the Hoyas, who need to replace Matt Winter and CT Fisher.

With the expected hires, it appears 10-year Georgetown assistant Scott Urick — son of Dave Urick, who stepped down in July after 23 seasons — won't retain a position on the staff. A source familiar with the situation told Lacrosse Magazine that Scott Urick was initially among Georgetown's head coaching search.

Meanwhile, Maryland coach John Tillman has two openings — defensive coordinator and volunteer assistant — on his staff. Cornell confirmed it "will be opening a nationwide search" for Rewkoski's former position.
