Detroit Mercy Hopes MAAC Boosts Profile

from press release

Seven home games and a chance to play in the conference and NCAA tournament highlight the Detroit Titans men’s lacrosse 2010 schedule, which was announced today by head coach Matt Holtz.

“It is a challenging schedule for us, but it’s great that we have more home games this year,” said Holtz. “Last year, we had a great crowd on hand to see our one home game and now, we will have the opportunity to have the student body come out more and see what Titan lacrosse is all about.”

The Titans enter their second year of existence as a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), with full post-season benefits. The top four teams in the league will play in the conference tournament, hosted by Marist in Poughkeepsie, NY, with the winner earning an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

“Having the chance to play in the MAAC is a major step for this program, and it gives us a great opportunity to play in the conference tournament with an NCAA championship bid,” noted Holtz.

Detroit opens the season at home against Bellarmine on Saturday, Feb. 6, in a contest that will be played indoors at Ultimate Soccer Arena in Pontiac.

After a home game against Quinnipiac on March 7, the Titans will embark on a three-game road swing with contests at Robert Morris (Mar. 13) and Lehigh (Mar. 15), before their first MAAC game in New York against Manhattan on Mar. 20.

The red, white and blue will then host Presbyterian on Mar. 22, with VMI visiting Titan Field in the first-ever home conference match-up on Mar. 27.

April will have Detroit on the road for four of its six games starting with back-to-back contests against defending MAAC champions Siena on Apr. 3 and at Yale on Apr. 4. New league rival Mount St. Mary’s visits the Motor City on Apr. 10, but Detroit will then quickly hit the road for conference affairs at St. Josephs (Apr. 17) and Canisius (Apr. 21).

UDM will have the benefit of playing its final two regular season conference matches on campus with Marist making the trip in on Apr. 24 and Wagner on May 1. The MAAC Championships will then take place the following weekend from May 7-9.
