Harvard Upends No. 15 UNH in Double OT

DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore Melanie Baskind scored the game-winning goal in the third overtime period to lift the Harvard women’s lacrosse team to a 10-9 win over No. 15 New Hampshire. Senior Katherine Martino made 11 saves in the net including one late in the third overtime on a free position shot to hold off the Wildcats (4-1).

Freshman Jennifer VanderMeulen led the Crimson (2-1) with five goals, a collect best for the rookie, who now leads the team with 11 goals. Freshman Danielle Tetreault and Baskind had a pair of goals each, while senior co-captain Sara Flood had one goal and two assists to go along with four draw controls.

The Crimson held an 8-4 lead after the first 30 minutes of play and led by as many as four during the first half. New Hampshire stormed back in the second frame outshooting the Crimson 13-2 in the second 30 minutes. The home team tied the score with just over a minute to play.

Harvard won the draw control to start the first two extra sessions, but was unable to get a shot off.

The Wildcats held a 24-16 advantage in shots and a 12-11 edge in draw controls. Both teams collected 14 ground balls. Baskind and junior Sam McMahon scooped up three each.

Harvard opens Ivy League play Saturday against defending Ancient Eight champion Penn. First draw is slated for noon.
